Gail Dines, Leslie Cannold and pornography on the ABC's Q&A

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Wednesday, May 25, 2011,
Both my feminist cat Jocelyn and I were over the moon knowing that two of the world's foremost feminists would be making a TV appearance last Monday night. Yes, the sassy Gail Dines and Australia's own patriarchal-paradigm buster Leslie Cannold were to be panelists on our favourite show, Q and A. We were so excited, we danced a dance of empowerment and joy!

But sadly as the debate wore on it became apparent that there was more than a little enmity between the two notable thinkers. It pains me ...

Albrechtsen, Carlton on Q&A before International Women's Day

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Tuesday, March 8, 2011,
It is International Women's Day today, fellow travellers, which is obviously cause for great celebration! You'll all be pleased to know that I danced a dance of empowerment and joy to that Helen Reddy classic with my feline, feminist fellow traveller Jocelyn.

But there was sadness too. My cat and I wept about the fact that blonde jokes are still being told in the workplace in this country, sometimes even by women themselves! And our tears flowed over the tragic dearth of the gentler (and also ...

North Korea's threat over that Christmas tree is more than justified!

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Wednesday, December 22, 2010,
Fellow travellers, as you well know I abhor violence. But I have to admit that in some cases it is justified. Here is a case in point: That cruel capitalist nation South Korea has decided to provoke atheist, communist North Korea by lighting up a giant Christmas tree near the border.

As one who is regularly driven to nausea by the orgy of greed and consumerism that is Christmas in Australia, I certainly know where my fellow travellers in Pyongyang are coming from.

Not only is this a case of re...

The Victorian election, the Greens and the fate of the planet

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Monday, November 29, 2010,
Fellow travellers, I am deeply disturbed by the election result in Victoria. The Liberals seem to have won! And as Bob Brown said it was also the Liberal Party's fault that the Greens didn't win a seat. We would have had several now if not for Ted Baillieu's appallingly unprincipled decision.

Of course, evil capitalists and nature rapers will be rubbing their clammy hands with glee. It's a truly distressing outcome for human and non-human Victorians, as well as for the environment globally.

A...

Women found to be greener than men. More female scientists, please

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Wednesday, November 17, 2010,
Fellow travellers, I am not at all surprised that women are deemed to be the greener gender. They are much closer to nature than men, and Gaia is a sassy sister, after all.

They are also more likely to believe in global warming, and that it is a serious problem. This shows that, contrary to so many sexist stereotypes, they are clearly much more rational than men.

But when I say rational, I don't mean the fake male kind of "rationalism". You know, the white coat-wearing, detached, cold, clinica...

Green sex book has me somewhat confused

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Saturday, May 22, 2010,
Fellow travellers, sometimes events or developments that I read about in the media cause me great joy. Others cause me deep consternation. And sometimes I experience both these reactions simultaneously!

Take this article, for example. It describes a new book about how to make your sex life more green and sustainable. Part of me is greatly heartened by this evidence of greater environmental awareness. But another part of me is quite shocked. The phallus is a tool of oppression, after all! Surel...

Volcanic Venus shows lava love to sassy sisters who stamped out strip clubs!

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Saturday, April 17, 2010,
Fellow travellers, as we all know, Gaia works in mysterious ways, so it is sometimes difficult to discern what She is trying to communicate to us. (Well, actually it's not that difficult for advanced souls like myself and my feisty feline fellow traveller Jocelyn to know. It's just a challenge for you and your friends. But don't worry, when that is the case we are happy to translate for you.)

But sometimes Gaia sends us a message that is completely unequivocal. This volcanic eruption in Icela...

Giant lizard has profound message

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Wednesday, April 7, 2010,
Fellow travellers, upon reading this article about a lizard that was recently discovered in the Philippines I was deeply appalled. You see, this close relative of the Komodo Dragon actually possesses two penises!

What on (Mother) Earth could Gaia be saying with this! As we all know Nature is kind and loving - the very antithesis of phallocentric patriachalism.

I was tempted to stop reading the article because I found it so disturbing. But bravely I struggled on in the hope that perhaps there m...

Cycle of violence takes life of warrior wombat

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Tuesday, April 6, 2010,
Fellow travellers, Nature has struck another blow for justice against an evil enemy. But sadly, the brave wombat who did Gaia's righteous bidding has been felled with an axe wielded by an appalling white peenie-waver!

The wombat was totally justified in attacking the man, who was clearly violating his territory. (As we all know, wombats have deep spiritual connections with their land.) So the butchery that ensued was doubly appalling.

But of course the media - being so human-centric - always ta...

Academy Awards ambivalence

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Tuesday, March 9, 2010,
Fellow travellers, I am heartened to know that sassy sister Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar for Best Director, and her film won Best Picture. This is certainly a highly empowering development for women all across the globe. And it's a nice coincidence that it just happened to occur at around the same time as International Women's Day.

But I am frankly appalled that she dedicated her win to "the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan. May they...

I believe that children are our future

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Sunday, November 15, 2009,
Fellow travellers, we often hear from the reactionary right that academia has been overtaken by the left. Nothing could be further from the truth. Universities across the globe are still completely dominated by eeevil white peenie-wavers who are hell bent - or should that be straight? - on oppressing women, minorities and Gaia.

Take this latest so-called "experiment": Psychologists in California have looked into how young children cope with fears both real and imagined. They were read stories...

The Liberal Party, Zoo Weekly and Claire Werbeloff

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Monday, November 9, 2009,
Fellow travellers, I'm sure many of you will remember Claire Werbeloff, who enjoyed a brief period of "stardom" after pretending to witness a shooting at Kings Cross.

Well, she has made the news again! It seems that she has been asked to be a Liberal candidate for the seat of Bradfield. As this article says, that appalling men's magazine Zoo Weekly has offered to pay for her to run.

You know the Liberal Party is simply beyond hope when they are commissioning these appallingly sexist peenie wav...

Conservative "cave man" conspiracy!

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Friday, November 6, 2009,
Fellow travellers, I'm sure that you are all sick and tired of climate change deniers insisting that those determined to stop the impending global catastrophe actually want to take humanity "back to the Stone Age" and "make us all cavemen". This is a contemptible and utterly false accusation! (But even if it weren't, what would be wrong with living more in harmony with nature, like our distant ancestors did?)

In any case, the many reich-wingers in the media and politics never miss a chance to ...

Are bikinis appropriate attire for a demo?

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Monday, November 2, 2009,
That appalling oil spill off the Western Australian coast has prompted a brave protest in which sassy sisters in bikinis covered themselves in oil and paraded in front of the Perth offices of the evil corporation responsible for the catastrophe.

While I heartily endorse the statement that these feisty feminist fellow travellers were making with their protest, did they really have to confirm the dominant paradigm of phallocentric lookism to make their point? While they weren't quite participati...

"Civilization" causes mutation

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Friday, October 30, 2009,
Just recently a clawed snake was discovered in China. Now there has been another serpent-themed warning from Gaia. This time it was a snake with two heads found in Illinois. Significantly, it was in a drawer full of junk.

If that's not a clear condemnation of the appalling wastefulness of Western conspicuous consumption, I don't know what is!
