Professor Bob Carter is a climate change denialist

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Monday, June 6, 2011,
Sassy sister Cate Blanchett recently, and quite movingly, said of her activism on the issue of climate change: ''I can't look my children in the face if I'm not trying to do something in my small way and to urge other people."

I applaud such courage and conviction. But for me, the sense of urgency is even more immediate. If I were not waging a (peaceful) war against the denialists and alerting the world to their appalling lies then I wouldn't be a able to look Gaia Herself in the face (and I ...

John Gordon's song "Australia (Whore of the World)" and feminism

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Friday, April 8, 2011,
Fellow travellers, as you all know, Western society is based upon prejudice and bigotry. Sadly, almost every established institution we have is there to serve the whims of appalling white male peenie wavers. That is why our "civilization" is rife with discrimination and oppression.

We on the left certainly have no lack of targets to subvert and ultimately destroy (in a compassionate way, of course). But the fact that there are just sooo many of them can complicate this process somewhat.

Just shut up, Robyn Wuth!

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Friday, January 21, 2011,
Fellow travellers, as one who regularly forces himself to read right-wing blogs to learn as much as possible about the change-fearing, febrile mindset of our collective enemy, I thought I'd seen it all. But no, today I read something that was even more appalling and bizzare than even the worst rantings of Tim Blair (on whose blog I found it, BTW).

It's a truly psychotic diatribe against our Bob Brown by an attitudinally unreconstructed Queenslander called Robyn Wuth. Some of the lines are so ...

More Aboriginal women in the West Australian mining industry

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Thursday, December 23, 2010,
Fellow travellers, as we all know racism and sexism often go together, particularly in the media. This is to be expected, since the whole paradigm is dominated by white male peenie wavers.

And sometimes this sinister subtext exists even in stories that appear at first to be attempting to deconstruct that depressing state of affairs. Take this article about how there are more and more Aboriginal women working in West Australian diamond mines. The whole tenor of the piece implies that this deve...

Environmental and gender aspects of Chilean miner story

Posted by Derek Sapphire on Thursday, October 14, 2010,
Fellow travellers, I know that a lot of people (even some on the left) are now celebrating the release of those 33 Chilean miners after their "terrible ordeal" under the ground.

Now, I don't want to condemn people outright for feeling a sense of relief. However, I do think it should be remembered that these men aren't simply heroes. After all, they are employees of a massive and hugely profitable mining company and therefore complicit in the rape of Gaia.

Also, anyone who is concerned about ge...
