Desperate dam climb of the "spider goats"

While reporting of environmental issues has improved over the years, many in the media continue to treat these subjects as fodder for light entertainment articles and "odd stories". Take this one about some so-called "spider goats" who are scaling a near vertical dam wall in Italy.

The seriousness of the goats' predicament is trivialized and the story is presented as a curiosity. In the article, the goats are described as "plucky", which is a bit of anthropomorphism that I find quite offensiv...

Environmental and gender aspects of Chilean miner story

Fellow travellers, I know that a lot of people (even some on the left) are now celebrating the release of those 33 Chilean miners after their "terrible ordeal" under the ground.

Now, I don't want to condemn people outright for feeling a sense of relief. However, I do think it should be remembered that these men aren't simply heroes. After all, they are employees of a massive and hugely profitable mining company and therefore complicit in the rape of Gaia.
